WE CELEBRATED PEACE DAY (30th JANUARY 2014)

This year we chose to remember Nelson Mandela, a great fighter for the human rights and President of South Africa.

We talked about him in class, made some displays around the school and on the 30^th January all of us went to the playground together to perform a dance based on an African music. The name of the dance is Kwaheri and you can find it here

LEARNING ABOUT NELSON MANDELA

Nelson Mandela was born in South Africa

in 1918.

In South Africa, people in the Government were white and they kept black people apart. Black people couldn’t go to the same schools, universities, restaurants… as white people. This system was called the apartheid. It was terrible and very unfair.

Nelson Mandela protested against the apartheid and so he went sent to prison.

He stayed for 27 years in prison, most of them in a place called Robben Island.

 

 

But after all this time he was released -he finally was free. And he became the President of South Africa.

As a President, Mandela worked for peace among white and black people in his country. That’s why he is loved and remembered all over the world. He died on 5^th December 2013.

CELEBRAMOS EL DÍA DE LA PAZ (30 DE ENERO DE 2014)

Este año elegimos recordar a Nelson Mandela, un gran luchador por los derechos humanos y Presidente de Sudáfrica.

Hablamos de él en las clases, pusimos algunos murales por todo el colegio y el 30 de enero bajamos todos juntos al patio para bailar una danza con música africana. La danza se llama Kwaheri.

CONOCIENDO A NELSON MANDELA

Nelson Mandela nació en Sudáfrica en 1918.

En Sudáfrica, el Gobierno estaba formado sólo por personas de raza blanca, que tenían apartadas a las personas de raza negra. No les dejaban ir a los mismos colegios, universidades o restaurantes que los blancos. Este sistema se llamaba apartheid. Era terrible y muy injusto.

Nelson Mandela protestó contra el apartheid y por eso le metieron en la cárcel.

Estuvo encerrado 27 años, la mayor parte de ellos en un lugar llamado Robben Island.

Pero después de todo ese tiempo, fue liberado. Por fin era libre. Y se convirtió en Presidente de Sudáfrica.

Como Presidente, Mandela trabajó por la paz entre blancos y negros en su país. Por esto es recordado y amado en todo el mundo. Murió el 5 de Diciembre de 2013.
